The application comprises a field guide segment, an interactive key for identification, and flashcard exercises. Serving as a complementary tool to Macroinvertebrates.org: The Atlas of Common Freshwater Macroinvertebrates of Eastern North America, this app is financially supported by the National Science Foundation with the objective of fostering water quality biomonitoring, environmental education, watershed stewardship, and recreational fishing.

- The PocketMacros app functions as a standalone platform that does not necessitate any form of account creation and operates without the need for an internet connection.
- PocketMacros does not gather identifiable user data; however, it has the capacity to collect anonymized user analytics data. This functionality is voluntary, deactivated by default, and can be easily activated or deactivated through the app's Settings section at any time. The data collected is incapable of individual user identification and is utilized for our research purposes and enhancing the application, such as recognizing popular features and underutilized components.
